Clinical Excellence
EPA focuses on 4 key principles….. physician satisfaction, patient satisfaction, operational efficiency, and clinical excellence. EPA Leadership works with the Baptist Health System Administrative Staff and Emergency Department Leadership to meet these goals.
Stroke
The Baptist Health System is stroke certified and has a tertiary stroke center at St. Luke’s Baptist Hospital…. We have recently been awarded the AHA Bronze Stroke Award.
Chest Pain
BHS Cardiology Departments are some of the best in the State, with best practices in STEMI care, N-STEMI care, syncope, and arrhythmias. Our ED physicians chair all of the local hospital chest pain committees, and lead the way by supporting our certifications in Cycle 1, 2, and 3 Chest Pain Center Accreditation.
Sepsis
BHS and EPA are proud to have a sepsis program in place with metrics that are measured and met on a monthly basis. We have consistently shown high performance measures in decreased mortality, use of appropriate antibiotics and blood cultures, appropriate placement of central lines, and more.
Ultrasound
We have dedicated sonosites available in all EDs for physicians who utilize them for many clinical scenarios.
Pediatrics
The Baptist Regional Children's Center at North Central Baptist Hospital is also home to a separate Children's Emergency Center just for kids. It's staffed by a caring and compassionate team of pediatric nurses and board-certified pediatric emergency physicians and offers:
- A calming nautical theme representing coastal Texas
- 2 trauma bays to serve more children
- Pediatric Intensive Care Unit to provide your critically ill child with the best care possible
- Child Life Area and certified child life specialist to provide your child and their siblings an area where they can play and enjoy their time in the hospital.
Trauma
Baptist Health System EDs are Level 4 trauma centers, except for North Central Baptist which is a Level 3. Being Level 3 and 4 trauma centers mean that our EDs aren’t inundated with knife and gun club patients that are time consuming for Level 1 trauma patients. San Antonio has 2 Level 1 trauma centers that take the majority of severe pre-hospital trauma.
Psychiatry
San Antonio and BHS have been lucky because we have not experienced some of the long psychiatry holds that have plagued other EDs. The Baptist Health System has an inpatient psychiatric facility that provides admission to the majority of our ED patients.
