Emergency Physicians Affiliates (EPA) was formed in 1973 and is engaged in the business of recruiting and scheduling Emergency Physicians for medical coverage of the Emergency Departments located in South and Central Texas, but primarily for the Baptist Health System (BHS) in San Antonio, Texas.   EPA has been the sole emergency services provider to the BHS for over 35 years.  EPA and the Emergency Physicians associated with our group are very involved with BHS medical staff activities, to include positions in the hospital all the way to Chief of Staff.  In 1995, EPA formed River City Emergency Physicians (hereinafter “RCEP”) for the sole purpose of contracting with insurance companies on behalf of the group.  We are known throughout the medical community as both EPA and RCEP.

EPA, as its known today, exists primarily because of the work of one physician. He is Jim Potyka, MD FACEP, affectionately known to the group as “Dr. P.”. Dr. Potyka became the EPA President in 1989, and served in this position until August 31, 2007. Dr Potyka has served in many positions in the BHS including President of the System Medical Staff (1992), Baptist Medical Center Chief of the Medical Staff (1991) and the San Antonio AirLife Medical Director (1990-2010). Dr. Potyka has been involved in many emergency medicine committees at the State and local level during his career. Although, he is not around everyday, Dr. P is still available for his wisdom and wit, and his legacy continues in almost every aspect of EPA.

Tim Taylor, MD FACEP
Dr. Taylor has been the EPA Chairman and CEO  since September 1, 2007.  He is a graduate of the Scott & White Emergency Medicine Residency Program and has been practicing Emergency Medicine in San Antonio since 2001 in the Baptist Health System Emergency Departments.
